The Lares Trek
This 3-day trek is a great introduction to the heart of the Sacred Valley, with an itinerary that offers an interesting combination of amazing mountain and valley scenery, beautiful hilltop vistas, and visits to Inca ruins and authentic Quechan communities. The hike goes through the Lares Valley and village, the highlights including the relaxing hot springs, several snow-capped peaks over 5000m, glacial lakes, and the option to take the train to Machu Picchu.
Lares Trek Day 1
Leaving early from Cuzco, a private 2-hour bus ride will take you towards Lares (3250m), the starting point for the trek. At the Lares Village you'll have a chance to relax in the hot springs before having lunch in the village. With mules and llamas carrying your packs, the 4-hour trek begins up to the Andean community of Quishuarani (3700m), where you'll get a glimpse of the stunning snow-capped peak of Colque Cruz (5700m) that rises majestically in the distance. The hike continues slowly upward where camp will be set next to a turquoise lake outside the Cancha Cancha village (3350m).
Lares Trek Day 2
Today will be an exploration of the Andean village of Quishuarani and the waterfalls that can be found following an original Inca stone path. More beautiful scenery follows on a 2-hour trek where you will reach the Pachacutec mountain pass (4500m) that opens up to spectacular views of the snow-capped peaks of Pitusiray (5750m) and Chicon (5500m). The two beautiful glacial lakes, Suriococha and Yuraccocha can be seen in the distance. This area is home to several bird species such as the Andean Ibis and Andean geese.
Lares Trek Day 3
The last day of hiking from the Village of Cancha Cancha is a leisurely 2-hour trek through the pastoral farmlands and thatched-roofed houses. The lush vegetation is home to wild flowers and hummingbirds. The trail ends at Sayhuapata (2800m) where a private bus will be waiting to take hikers to the train departing for Aguas Calientes to visit nearby Machu Picchu.
